Giving thanks to our God

Last Sunday, 15th October 2017 in Mary Help of Christians Church in Limerick, during the 12 noon Mass there was a small ceremony done to give thanks to our God the Creator for his generous gifts to us. The sacred space was created and this script was used:

GivingThansToOurGod-02At this time of harvest
our hearts are filled with gratitude
for the riches and bounty
that have come from our fertile earth…

We give thanks
for what we very often take for granted.
And we praise Creator God
for nurturing our spirits.

GivingThansToOurGod-04A bowl of potatoes
reminds us of the humble spud
which is still a great staple food for us.

A basket of apples
– we give thanks for trees loaded with fruit
and memories of Mothers warm apple tart.

A packet of seeds
– a symbol of the potential for growth
within the earth and ourselves.

GivingThansToOurGod-07The empty bowl…
we remember all those who hunger
and for whom there is no harvest.

A loaf of bread
the huge symbol of Eucharist
and of the Bread of life that sustains us.

And grapes…
fruit of the vine, the Blood of Christ.

GivingThansToOurGod-08Lord may we treat this wonderful earth
with nurturing care…
may those who work it
do so sustainably and with respect…

Give us generous hearts Lord
willing to share and not count the cost…

We bless you God of seed and harvest Creator God Provider.
