Salesian involvement in parish ministry is quite extensive internationally. In Ireland we are involved in three parishes: two in Dublin and one in Limerick City. The Salesian Parish thinks of itself and acts in accordance to the model of the Church presented in Vatican II, a Church which is a communion of vocations and charisms at the service of the mission of evangelisation and the transformation of the world according to Christ.
The Salesian parish seeks to re-create in our times the model of Don Bosco’s Oratory in Turin, which is described as the parish of the abandoned young person without a parish. The Salesian parish is to be a synthesis of:
o A missionary community which tries make contact with everyone, especially the young at a distance from the Church
o An educative community which strives to build strong partnerships between school, society, parish and the home.
o A community that welcomes and celebrates as Christ would, offers formation in the faith and is centred on God’s Word, the Sacraments, especially of Eucharist and Reconciliation and on Devotion to Our Lady.
Our Lady Help of Christians Parish was formed in Milford, Limerick in 1981 to cater for the growing housing developments in the area and the expanding college campuses of the National Institute of Technology and Thomond College, which is now the University of Limerick. With this in mind the Salesians also built a student hostel which continues to be open to third level students. We also have a Salesian Spirituality Centre and there is a University Chaplain on site.
The population of the parish several thousand students live in the parish during the college year. The first students at Milford National School attended classes in pre-fabs in 1982. In 1993, the school finally got a building and a new school hall and a gym was added in 2009. In 2011 the Salesian Community added a new block to their residence which is now functioning as a resource for the parish and diocese. It will become a centre for evangelization. The DeSales English Language Summer School is also run here. The parish also privides chaplaincy to Milford Hospice and the Nursing Home for the elderly.

Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Sean McDermott Street
This is a parish community and houses the Crinan Youth Project. We are currently the administrators of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Sean McDermott Street. The parish was constituted in 1970 from the Pro-Cathedral Parish.
As a religious community living in the area since the early 1990’s we are committed to being a supportive, gentle and spiritual presence for the people of this inner city area. We believe that our Christian faith and the Salesian story contain the life giving meaning, hope and healing that is often needed in areas and families that have suffered from grief and marginalization.
Working closely with the local community, Salesians were involved in establishing the Crinan Youth Project in 1996. This initiative was seen as a worthwhile response to the heroin crisis and the lack of services for under 18 year olds who were experiencing problematic drug use in the North Inner City. They also are involved in the running of the Junior and Primary Schools and have connections with the Larkin Community College.
