In the magnificent splendour of Maynooth’s Gunn Chapel, Fr Asfaha Tesfay Weldu was conferred with a Master’s Degree in Theology by the Chancellor of St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, His Eminence Cardinal Seán Brady, on 9 November 2013.
Fr Tesfay submitted a thesis on the Morality of the Death Penalty in Light of the Virtues, under the Directorship of Rev. Dr Padraig Corkery. He examines the renewed interest in the virtues in moral matters and in Christian living, and then turns his attention to the issue of the death penalty in the contempo- rary world. He clarifies the Church’s ability and position to respond to modern realities without breaking away from her traditional doctrines. He presents in particular Pope John Paul II’s Evangelium Vitae as a stunning representation of the Church’s response to the culture of death in general and to the death penalty in particular. His conclusion is that capital pun- ishment can rarely if ever be justified in the modern age. His objective is to highlight the relevance of virtue ethics in our postmodern society as it faces the culture of death and the role of virtue ethics in Christian moral life. He hopes he has helped raise awareness in our society that will inspire others to do more research in this area, and in so doing play a vital role in promoting moral values and respect for human life.
With Cardinal Seán Brady and Mgr Hugh Connolly.
Fr Tesfay is a Salesian from the Vice Province of Africa Ethiopia-Eritrea, which was established in 1998 under the patronage of Maria Kidane Meheret, with headquarters in Addis Abeba.
Front cover: Fr Asfaha congratulated by Rev. Dr Liam Tracey.
